Thane likely to get a woman mayor this time​

With women getting a clear cut majority in ​the ​TMC elections, Thane is likely to get a woman mayor for the first time. ​​Parisha Sarnaik and Nandini Vichare ​seem to be the frontrunners for now.

​This year, ​for the first time​,​ the number of women corporators exceeded even the majority needed to come to power as 72 out of 131 elected corporators are women.  
 
“​This time a woman definitely has to be ​named ​the mayor as for many years men have taken the mayoral seat in Thane,” says Vimal Bhoir from Shiv Sena and second time corporator from ward no. 7A.  
 
And the names that are making the rounds to take the prestigious seat are of MLA (member of legislative assembly) Pratap Sarnaik’s wife Parisha and MP (member of parliament) Rajan Vichare’s wife Nandini.  “Both Parisha and Nandini have been selected consecutively for the second time.  So they are being considered,” says a senior Sena leader who ​is​ not wish to be named.
 
However, there are others like advocate Anita Gore who are serving a third term as a corporator and their names ​are also being considered.  “There are others like Gore who are ​third-time ​corporators and are well-educated and qualified.  So even they are in the race for ​the ​mayoral post​. ​The decision will be taken at Matoshree and you will know on March 6,” ​he said.
 
Sena has won a clear cut majority in TMC elections with 67 seats out of which over 43 are held by women corporators.  Sena had fielded ​a ​total ​of ​119 candidates out of which 67 were women and 53 are men.  BJP (Bharitya ​Janata ​Party) had nominated 120 candidates out of which 63 are women and 57 are men.
