In a meeting organised by the Thane Citizens Foundation (TCF), guardian minister Eknath Shinde has promised to find a mid-way solution to Thane’s housing societies’ garbage woes. Thanekars had approached the minister with their problems after the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) ordered societies to manage their waste by themselves starting November.

The TCF meeting was chaired by Shinde and was attended by Thane Mayor Meenakshi Shinde and over 250 representatives of various housing societies. Residents raised concerns about solid waste management in the meeting.

“Most housing complexes in Thane are 15-20 years old and do not have the place nor the machinery to manage waste,” says Kasber Augustine, president, TCF. “We will do the job of segregating wet and dry waste and hand it over to the TMC. But the housing societies maintained that it is the job of the Thane municipal corporation (TMC) to manage the waste.

“When the TMC itself is not experienced in processing waste, how can they expect the societies to do so? Even we lack the necessary expertise and infrastructure,” a TCF member said. They suggested that the TMC should introduce a model on waste processing which they would like to follow.

Eknath Shinde assured the housing societies that the decision of waste processing will not be imposed on them. “We would hold a meeting with the TMC commissioner, members of the housing societies to find an amicable solution to this problem,” Shinde said.

In January, the TMC had announced that housing complexes/establishments, which are 5,000 sq mts and above and generate over 100 kg per day have to manage their own garbage. They gave a deadline of July 15 after which TMC would stop collecting garbage from them. But due to the monsoon, the deadline was extended to October 31. After that, the residents have to handle their own waste, both, solid and wet. The decision is likely to affect over 1,000 housing societies in Thane, especially on Ghodbunder road.
