Gold jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh was allegedly stolen from a temple in Ulhasnagar township in Maharashtra's Thane, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday when some unidentified persons broke into Jhulelal temple, run by Chalia Trust and decamped with the gold ornaments, said Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar.

The stolen booty includes a gold umbrella, a chain, a crown and a bracelet, the officer said.

An offence was registered against the unidentified persons under Sections 380 (theft in dwelling house) and 457 (house-breaking by night in order to commit offence) of the IPC, following a police complaint by a temple trustee Bhagwandas Tehalramani after he saw the lock of the temple door open and the jewellery missing.
