Family members of Thane girl, Prachi Zade who was stabbed to death by a jilted lover on Saturday, want action against the police officials. Her father Vikas Zade alleged that had the police taken action against Akash Pawar in June when he hit Prachi, his daughter would have been alive, but the cops did not pay any heed and let him go with a warning. While Thane police commissioner maintained that all legalities were followed, he has also asked similar complaints in all police stations in Thane to be reviewed to ensure the safety of women.

On Sunday morning Vikas Zade returned to his home in Kopri after collecting ashes of his late daughter Prachi from a nearby crematorium. He looked shaken but was in control of his emotions while he talked about Prachi. "Kapurbawdi police is responsible for my daughter's death. Had they acted in June when we lodged a complaint against Pawar, she would have been alive," he said,

Prachi was friends with Pawar, but he was in love with her. "She had refused his advances many times and had cut off all communication with him," says Vikas. She did a part-time job at Kapurbawdi and on June 11 at around 8.30pm, she was in the parking lot of her office. "She was talking to a friend when Pawar came and hit her so hard that she fell on the ground. He also threatened to not to break their friendship," he adds.

"We approached the police, but they took it very lightly," says Vikas. The cops lodged an NC (non-cognisable offence) against Pawar while Vikas says they should have lodged a case of molestation under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code. "Police inspector Kalyan Rao Karpe who handled the case asked us to give Pawar one more chance. I asked him what if he comes tomorrow and throws acid on my daughter or stabs her and implored him behind Pawar the bars. No one paid a heed and allowed him to go after giving him a warning in front of his uncle," says Vikas.

At last his fears came true on August 4, he lost his daughter due to the callous attitude of the cops. "I want inspector Karpe to be suspended and Pawar to be punished severely so that nothing like this ever happens on Thane's streets," he says.

When contacted the newly appointed Thane police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, he said that the police took necessary preventive action as per the girl's complaint. "As per the records, the girl had come to the police station in June and complained that Pawar had yelled at her for speaking to another male friend. We logged an NC, he even gave a written bond to the police that he will not bother her anymore," says her.

FATHER'S OUTRAGE

Police inspector Kalyan Rao Karpe who handled the case asked Vikas to give Pawar one more chance. The latter implored him to put Pawar behind the bars fearing fearing the worst. No one paid a heed and allowed him to go after giving him a warning
