A 70-year-old Kalwa resident died on Sunday evening after she fell into a pit dug up for road repair work in Kharegaon. Identified as Shantabai Rathod, the woman was on her way home.

Angry relatives who had approached the Kalwa police station are upset that a day after the incident the police have made no move to take action against those carrying out the repairs for leaving the pit fenceless and without any warning.

The Kalwa police have registered an accidental death case as of now and are investigating further.

Shantabai's grandson Vinod said, "There's some or the other work being carried out on the road all the time and there isn't any proper lighting there either. I am sure my granny must have fallen in because of the darkness. Also, none of the gathered locals tried to rescue her. She was inside for two hours before a relative of ours, who was passing by, saw her and jumped in."

"The pipe in the pit must have led to her death. I want justice... There is no fencing around the pit, not even a stone to alert locals. The contractor should be taken into custody. The work has been going on for the past six months and yet there's been no improvement in the condition of the road," he added.

Senior inspector J Babar said, "We are investigating the case thoroughly. After going through all the possibilities, we will zero in on who is the accused and make the arrest accordingly."
