Summer of 2016 is what everyone in Thane district and Mumbai will remember for a long time — the year when the area faced maximum water scarcity and cuts. But instead of relaxing now that monsoon has hit the city, residents of Thane and Kalyan have gotten engaged in tree plantation.

On Sunday, residents of Shalmali co-operative housing society in Vasant Vihar, Thane, did their bit for nature. "We planted saplings at Joggers' Park and central garden; other housing societies took saplings from us," said K Kumar, chairman of Vasant Vihar Annexe.

"Because residents have time only on weekends, the other societies will do it next weekend."

Vasant Vihar Annexe has 46 societies and 82 buildings under its aegis. "Though there is enough greenery here, we still do tree plantation," Kumar added.

To ensure more greenery and continue this environment-friendly action, all buildings have been asked to plant at least 10 trees in their compound.

Similarly, residents of Badlapur, Ambernath and Ulhasnagar have taken to tree plantation with a vengeance since last weekend. "We planted over 1,000 trees, most of which are fruit-bearing (amla, cashew, sitaphal), so that birds can feed on them," said Satyajeet Burman, president of Ambernath Citizens Forum.

"We need trees to maintain the ecological balance and produce more oxygen. So, every weekend this rainy season we will be planting trees."

They are also donating saplings to schools in the area so that even children can partake in this activity, which benefits the environment.

Also, to ensure that the existing trees are well taken care of and do not fall during heavy rains, they will put organic fertiliser and red earth on them. "Whenever it rains heavily, trees fall everywhere. Nothing is done to strengthen them. So we will use manure and mix it with earth and put it on the base of each tree to give it more strength," said Burman.
