It's wedding season and also that time of the year when chain snatchers are active and keep an eye near wedding halls.
So, Thane police chief has asked his men to keep a strict vigil in such areas where marriages and other functions take place and chain snatchers can be easily arrested.
According to the police, chain snatchers target women in isolated areas or walking alone. They come from behind and quickly snatch their gold chain or mangalsutra.
To ensure such incidents do not take place this year, police have tightened nakabandi and have deployed more officials to patrol the streets.
"During wedding time, many people park their cars near the wedding hall and when they are walking towards their car, snatchers attack them. Some even break the glass of the car and flee with music system and other valuables," said an officer.
A senior official from Thane commissionerate said, "Mostly during the wedding season, there are chances of rise in burglary or house thefts, but chain snatching is common as it's easy to target women and earn a quick buck.
However, with string nakabandi at prime locations and patrolling during the day and night, we will nab the culprits."
Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Parag Manere said, "Police stations will be informed about the marriages taking place in their area and also about other functions in the city. Accordingly, officials will be alerted in that area and more patrolling will be increased."
"At the same time, nakabandis will be conducted near the marriage venue, so that even if chain snatching takes place, we will be able to catch the accused," he added.
