The death sentence of Yakub Memon, brother of Tiger Memon who engineered the 1993 serial bombings in Mumbai, is still in limbo.

While 1993 serial blast convict Yakub Memon's mercy petition is still being heard by the Supreme Court, Thane police have upped the security measures to tackle any untoward incident that may endanger the lives of citizens. The Thane administration has sounded a high alert in the city till July 31.
The death sentence of Yakub Memon, brother of Tiger Memon who engineered the 1993 serial bombings in Mumbai, is still in limbo. But Thane police have pulled up its socks to meet any eventuality that might arise in case Yakub's mercy petition is rejected by the apex court. "The entire Thane region from Thane city to Kalyan has been put on high alert," said a senior police officer from Thane commissionerate. "As such, leave of all the policemen have been cancelled and everyone is on duty," he added.
The citizens have been told to be ready to brace for nakabandis everywhere. "Our officers will be guarding the streets in uniform as well as in civil clothes to keep an eye on trouble makers," the officer said. Thane police, which has a strength of 7,500 cops, have already put its informers on the job to tackle any unrest planned by anti-social elements.
"Moreover, we are also keeping a tab on social networking sites to know the general sentiment in public and update ourselves on sensitive spots," he added.

The citizens have been told to be ready to brace for nakabandis everywhere.
