The practice adopted by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) of dumping garbage on the doorsteps of residents and shopkeepers who have failed to pay the garbage disposal tax has put the Thane Civic Commissioner, Sanjeev Jaiswal, in a tough spot. The newly elected Thane Mayor, Shiv Sena's Meenakshi Shinde, has blamed the civic chief for instructing his colleagues "to create nuisance in the city". Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has now called for an enquiry and has ordered strict action against those responsible for the menace.

On Thursday, Thanekars woke up to the foul stench of garbage thrown on the footpaths in Kalwa, Gokhale road, Ram Maruti road and Station road. These areas have markets with numerous shopkeepers and businessmen working there.

The act of disposing garbage was captured on CCTV. This came about after shopkeepers and businessmen failed to pay the garbage disposal tax initiated by the Thane civic body.

The members of the Jain community protested against the diktat after fish, meat and chicken waste were allegedly spotted outside their stores.

Bharat Mote, President of Subhash Path in Thane, a body comprising of businessmen in the city, said, "On Friday, the TMC failed to clear the garbage. We want them to do away with the tax. Strict action should be taken against the civic commissioner." He further said, "The civic chief should be suspended immediately for causing inconvenience to Thanekars".

Shinde said, "The civic chief is responsible for instructing his colleagues to throw garbage on the streets of the city. He has failed to collect taxes on time, which now has prompted him to scatter garbage outside the shops of businessmen who are not only tax payers, but are responsible for electing representatives."

Shine added, "Despite the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Smart City projects, the civic chief has gone all out to scatter garbage across the city to meet the target set for collecting tax".

Thane MLA Sanjay Kelkar raised the issue in the state assembly and condemned the incident.

A delegation of businessmen met with CM Fadnavis on Friday to discuss the issue. When contacted, Jaiswal refused to comment on the incident.
