After the Union government order to include the mephedrone (MD or M-Cat or Meow Meow) drug under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) 1985, the Thane city police have arrested an accused with 55gram of MD. Thus Thane has become the first city in Maharashtra to arrest a peddler of MD. The accused, Hassan aka Haji Afsar Quereshi, 40, is a juice seller.

The accused was arrested near the Mumbra railway station on Tuesday night. He was produced in court and was given police custody till February 27. The 55 grams of MD found on him cost around Rs 27500. Police said the accused was earlier staying in Andheri, and had come to stay in Mumbra seven or eight years ago. Police were tipped off about the peddler by a local activist named Munna Sahil.

Late at night, they reached the fruit stall and nabbed the accused who owned it.

Mandar Dharmadhikari, senior police inspector from Thane anti-narcotics cell said, "I, along with our team Mahadev Chabukswar and Amol Walzhade, went to the spot and arrested the accused. Until now, 90% of the drug peddlers whom we have arrested consume MD drugs. It is good that the offences will be now registered under the NDPS act, so that now the accused will be afraid of incurring a long jail sentence under the act."
