A seven-foot long female python, who survived a near death after being grievously injured by a JCB machine carrying out digging at Thane, has been recuperating at the Thane Society for Protection of Cruelty to Animals (TSPCA)

According to TSPCA president Shakuntala Majumdar, the python was brought by locals from Vartak Nagar in an extremely critical condition on the evening of June 7.

"The python suffered cuts at several places on its body as the 'teeth' portion of the digger of the JCB seemed to have sunk into the python's body. We immediately referred the python to veterinary surgeon Dr Deepa Katyal who started her treatment," she said.

"When the python was brought to me she was in an extremely traumatic condition. She had internal injuries due to which there was a lot of blood loss and even her mouth was full of blood and this all had led to the python being in lot of pain and dehydration," said Katyal, who managed to save the life of the python.

According to Katyal, on observation it was found that there were two major wounds one was almost 15 centimeter long while the other was so deep that muscles were torn as well as there was lot of mud inside the wounds.

"We cleaned up the wounds several times to ensure there was no infection and started giving medicines to treat the internal bleeding as well as muscle injuries. We did not stick the wounds initially as we wanted to avoid any kind of infection and now that she is doing better her wounds can be stapled," she said, adding that the python was recovering and getting back its strength and should be totally fit for release in 20 to 25 days.

While treating this massive python is not an easy task due to its sheer strength, the vet claimed almost six people were required to hold the snake down even as she treated its injuries. "It's extremely important to report such incidents and thanks to the people who decided to rescue this python," Katyal pointed out.

The python, which is now housed in a rescue cage at TSPCA is fed on a combination diet of mashed egg white, chicken kheema. "She is fed once in a day using a tube and when it is removed for feeding its wounds are also dressed up," said Majumdar.
