Thane: 19-year-old mobile thief, whose actions led to death of railway passenger, jailed

The latter jumped from the train to get the phone back but died due to fatal injuries.

A 19-year-old mobile thief responsible for the death of a railway passenger, who died 10 days back, is finally behind the bars. He was arrested by Thane GRP on Wednesday, for snatching the mobile phone of a train passenger from a moving train. The latter jumped from the train to get the phone back but died due to fatal injuries.

What happened?

On August 19 around 12.52am Chetan Amriti Ahirao, 35 from Nashik boarded Kalyan train from Kalwa station' in Thane. He was standing on the door of the general compartment of the train on platform number one. As the train started moving towards Kalyan, Ajay Solanki, 19 who was seen loitering on the platform snatched Ahirao's phone.

To get back his mobile phone, the passenger also jumped back but till then the coach was away from the platform. Ahirao fell down at the end of the platform and sustained injuries. "We immediately rushed him to Thane civil hospital where he was declared dead," says an official from Thane GRP (general railway police).

With the help of the CCTV footage which recorded the entire incident the RPF was able to nab Solanki who is a resident of Shantinagar slums in Kalwa. He was arrested under sections 304, 394 of the indian penal code and various sections of Indian Railway act. He was produced in Kalyan railway court which remanded him to police custody till September 3. "He was arrested earlier in 2017 in mobile snatching case at Kalyan station," says he.

Nikhilesh Ravinarayan Nishad, a resident of Santacruz, was standing on the footboard of a Churchgate-bound train, when a thief, who hiding behind an electric pole between Khar and Bandra stations, hit Nishad’s hand. Nishad, who was holding his mobile phone in his hand, dropped it due to the sudden jolt. Thief’s standing on the tracks in position, then picked up the mobile phone and fled into the mangroves.
