PUNE: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Tuesday paid tributes to eminent playwright Vijay Tendulkar whose controversial play "Ghashirman Kotwal" had witnessed widespread protests led by the Sena more than three decades ago.

"Vijay was an old friend. I first met him near the "Navyug' press of Acharya Atre in Mumbai....After we got acquainted he started taking interest in 'Marmik' (Thackeray's Cartoon weekly) and suggested headings for some columns," he said in party mouthpiece "Saamna".

"Later we did not have many occasions to interact. Our relations soured after the staging of Ghashiram Kotwal. Otherwise there never was any problem between us. I pay my respects to Vijay on behalf of all Shiv Sainiks," Thackeray added.

Shiv Sena had spearheaded anti-Ghashiram Kotwal agitation in the state with former Lok Sabha Speaker, ex-Maharashtra chief minister Manohar Joshi in the forefront in 1971. The party had alleged that the play had distorted Maharashtra's history with a perverse portrayal of Nana Phadanvis.
