A teenager was arrested by the Azad Maidan police on Sunday for allegedly making obscene phone calls to female cops posted in the main control room of the city police. The arrested accused has been identified as Mohammed Rehman Mustaq Shaikh, a resident of Govandi.

According to the police, the complainant in the case is a 25-year-old woman police constable. On February 6, when she was on night duty, she received a call from an unknown mobile number around 11.27pm. The caller said he "liked" the cop and proceeded to indulge in vulgar talks, officials said.

"The caller then hurled abuses at the victim, outraging her modesty. He made several such calls to other female cops present in the control room that night. The victim and two of her colleagues then approached police and lodged a complaint against him," said an officer from Azad Maidan police station.

The police traced the cell tower location of the caller and apprehended him. They have also seized the mobile phone used to make the calls. The police department receives around 50-60 hoax or abusive calls every year, which is a major source of irritation to the personnel. As such, the Mumbai Police has decided to crack down severely on such callers.
