It was a scene straight out of a movie, and a common occurrence in most parts of North India, but this happened on Monday in Thane. A girl was kidnapped in a car at Vasant Vihar, Thane, on Monday evening. Though onlookers reported the matter to the police, no formal case has been lodged yet.

On Monday at 5.45 pm, a girl, who was walking on the road at Vasant Vihar, was picked up by unknown people in a car. "My neighbour and I were walking towards Prashant corner in Vasant Vihar when we heard screams," said Rajesh Patil (name changed), an onlooker. "We saw an elderly man running behind the car and asking the crowd to help him stop the car," he said.

Patil thought that somebody might have robbed the old man of his purse or chain as the car's back door was open. "So we tried to stop the car but to our horror we saw that there were four boys in the car, who had kidnapped a 16-18-year-old girl," he added. The boys were holding the girl's arms while half of her body was outside the car and she was screaming for help.

"We tried to stop the car and even requested passers-by and motorcyclists to help but nobody came to our aid," he said. Patil then dialled 100 and informed the police about the incident. It was a blue Santro with the number 2389.

When we contacted Vartak Nagar police station they confirmed the news. "On Monday evening some people had approached us claiming that a girl was kidnapped in the above manner. But, nobody lodged a complaint nor did the girl's parents come to us," said a cop from Vartak Nagar police station. "As different people gave separate car numbers it has become difficult to trace the vehicle. We have formed two teams and one team has left for Mumbai to trace the car," he added.
