An overhead wire breakdown on the Mumbai Metro resulted in giving a harrowing time to commuters for over an hour. It also affected the traffic on roads between Versova and Ghatkopar.

The overhead wire broke at Andheri bridge (over railway tracks) between 4.45 and 5pm when the metro was headed for Ghatkopar.

It took over an hour for the services to resume, but by then the damage was done. The stations were and roads were crowded and people walked on the emergency walkway to reach the nearest station. It took over 10-15 minutes for the commuters to step out of the stranded train and reach the nearest station.

Avi Dhanoa, a commuter who was stuck, tweeted: "Stuck inside the metro #mumbaimetro #technicalproblem #scary".

As a measure to control crowd, passengers were not allowed to enter the metro stations.

It took around half an hour to run metro services on a shorter route or loop, that is between Airport Road and Ghatkopar metro stations.

A Mumbai Metro spokesperson said: "Their was an overhead wire failure near Andheri and train services were suspended temporarily between Versova and Airport station. But trains were running between Airport station and Gharkopar station."

This is the first instance of such an incident wherein commuters had to step out of the train mid-section, that is between two stations.

It was 6.30pm when the services were restored completely on the entire 11.4km- long corridor. Thereafter, there wasn't any respite for the metro commuters as the platforms and metro trains were overcrowded. Commuters were comparing the rush to that of Mumbai suburban trains during the peak hours.

Earlier, there have been incidents wherein metro services were disrupted for a few minutes. Those cases were due to power related problems or due to fire incidents that had happened on road below the corridor.
