The Vikhroli police have registered a case of dowry-related harassment against a Bengaluru-based electronic engineer, his parents and his sister after his 30-year-old wife allegedly complained of assault and physical torture at their hands. She also informed the police that her in-laws have, against her will, kept her three-month old daughter with her sister-in-law.

Police said the complainant married the electronic engineer five years ago, after they met through a matrimonial site. She told the police that after her marriage, she moved to her husband's house in Bengaluru. Three months later, when her husband moved to Chennai for work, her in-laws bought another house in Bengaluru. She alleged that at this point, her in-laws demanded a dowry of Rs 15lakh from her, and when she and her father were unable to give the money, her in-laws beat her up.

She returned to Mumbai four days ago with her brother, and is currently being treated at Mahatma Phule hospital in Vikhroli. "The victim has informed us that her in-laws bought a property worth Rs65 lakhs and demanded Rs15 lakh from her. When she and her father were unable to raise the money, she was assaulted," said an officer from Vikhroli police station. He added, "When she was unable to bear it, the victim called her brother, who brought her back to Mumbai, and approached us with a complaint."

Vikhroli police have registered a case under section 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 34 (common intention) against the husband Santosh Ambekar, father-in-law Ramesh Ambekar, mother-in-law Sharda Ambekar and sister-in-law Jyotsna Kale.
