From creating a gyrocopter to engineering a green building, the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B), will introduce students from across the world to a host of technologies as part of its Techfest 2014.

Popular for its workshops, the upcoming Techfest will have 15 of them in everything from Web development to robotics, spread across three days from January 3 to 5. “Going with the philosophy of learning while you do, our workshops promise to be an enjoyable and enriching experience for the participants with significant interaction amongst peers having similar interests,” said Divyam Bansal of Techfest 2014.

The festival will see a mix of new and popular workshops. “While finalising the list of workshops, we consult the participants from last year to know what they want to see more and also the tech community to know what is new,” Bansal explained.

The workshops that will be returning in 2014 on popular demand are ethical hacking, android application development and an advanced workshop on creating a flying object. “Last year, we had a workshop which taught students how to create a flying object. That workshop received tremendous response, so this time too, we have a workshop on creating a gyrocopter, a stable flying platform adept at surveillance and monitoring,” said Bansal.

The new additions are a workshop on augmented reality, cloud computing and green architecture. “Every year, Techfest introduces us to concepts which are relatively new and not part of our textbooks. This is a great way of knowing what the industry has to offer,” said Sarang Pandit, a fourth year engineering student.

In 2013, Techfest saw a footfall of over 1 lakh students. “Every year, we see over 1,000 students from the world over attend the workshops. for the 2014 one, we have already received over 400 registrations in just a few days,” said Bansal. The number of students is restricted to 200 per workshop and it costs anywhere between Rs1,500 to Rs2,750 per head for a team of six.
