A study conducted by New Horizons Health and Research Foundation (NHHRF) claims if teachers are well trained, they would be able to identify and have the requisite skills to handle children with difficulties.
What is eCRM programme?

The program, Effective Class Room Management (eCRM) aimed to provide teachers the skills to identify typical/atypical development among students to take action early. The results of eCRM training highlighted that after understanding the two behaviour, all the myths and misleading information they had were cleared out.

What did eCRM curriculum include?

Questionnaires were handed over to teachers before and after training. The sample size of the programme was 308 teachers in private schools in Mumbai, Badlapur, Baramati and Baroda. The eCRM curriculum included topics on child developmental concerns, such as mental sub- normality, LD, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, conduct disorders and oppositional defiant disorders, cerebral palsy, communication disorders and emotional concerns.

A mock training session

A mock class was set-up where teachers were trained to identify students with difficulties. They were then asked to communicate their findings with parents. Once the problem is identified, teachers need to help the child with his/her needs and studies in the class. They were also offered comprehensive knowledge on behavioral and learning differences commonly observed in classroom and strategies to handle such behavioural changes.

The programme included lectures, case studies and group discussions. Teachers also attended clinical observations of therapeutic intervention programs at a New Horizons Child Development Centre.

Dr Samir Dalwai, developmental pediatrician, founder of NHHRF, said, " Teacher development programme is to identify children with difficulties and what all teachers can do with her limitations."

Arundhati Chauhan, deputy director distance education, SNDT, said, "Inclusive education is optional paper in SNDT for teachers training. But the curriculum that includes topics like learning disability and other disorders are there for the past 10 years. Only problem is that teachers are not given regular training in schools."
