Announcing a major relief to lakhs of teachers in the state on the eve of Teachers' Day, the state government has said schoolteachers will be given all their dues on the day of retirement itself.

Speaking to Zee24Taas on Friday, education minister Vinod Tawde said, "Teachers who work so hard throughout their life in educating children must not be made to run around for their own money. The government is working on a policy under which every teacher will get his/her cheque on the last day of his/her service."

Tawde admitted that there is a huge backlog of dues of retired teachers, but these too will be cleared soon. He also announced the launch of cashless medical insurance card scheme for teachers on Friday.

Taking a tough stand against errant educational institutions, Tawde reiterated that all schools which flout rules and loot public money will face stern action. "I am not against schools that are doing good work, but I will not leave those that flout rules," he said.

Tawde is facing flak from schools and teachers unions since August 28, when his department issued a GR about restructuring of schools, which is expected to render hundreds of teachers jobless.

"Not a single teacher will lose job. The 12,000-13,000 who become extra in the restructuring drive will be accommodated in schools where there is a shortage of teachers," he said.

Tawde also said that no school or college will be allowed to collect donation. "Schools that are doing so are mainly CBSE or IB ones."

On criticism of the no-fail policy, the minister said schools have understood the concept wrong. "They stopped taking exams when no-fail policy was brought in, something they shouldn't have done. If students fail in one or more subjects, schools have to tutor them extra and then again take exams and only then promote them to the next class."

Tawde also promised action against Shikshak Prasarak Mandal and Ruia college — their irregularities were exposed by dna and Zee24Taas. "The committee is probing both issues. We want to make a watertight case before going ahead."
