More than 60,000 schools in the state are likely to go on a token strike on December 12. The issue involves teachers. A number of teachers' organizations have decided go on protest on issues related to surplus teachers and Right to Education. While one organisation (Shikshak Bharti) has told the government that it would protest by keeping schools shut on December 12, the Maharashtra Junior College Teachers Union has said it would hold a protest demonstration in front of the Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur on December 15.

On Thursday, most of the teachers and school authorities held a meeting at Anjuman Islam premises in CST to discuss issues related to teachers and schools. Shikshak Bharti has demanded that the government resolution on 45,000 surplus teaching and non-teaching staff be withdrawn. Other demands include paying salary grant to aided schools which have not been paid since long. Unaided schools also have demanded grant from the state government.

Kapil Patil, MLC, teachers constituency, said: "Around 60,000 schools across the state will go on a token strike if our demands are not conceded." Uday Nare, spokesperson, Shikshak Bharti, said: "There are 45,000 teaching and non-teaching staff across the state who will become surplus if the government resolution is not withdrawn. Many teachers will lose their jobs if the Right to Education rule (one teacher for 30 students) is implemented."

Ashok Belsare, president, Shikshak Bharti, said: "We want the government to start paying teachers' salary online. Offline payment is slowly depriving teachers of their jobs." Anil Deshmukh, general secretary, Maharashtra Junior College Teachers Union, said: "There are around 30,000 teachers in Marathwada region who have become surplus. We are going to protest in front of the Vidhan Bhavan during the winter session against this. There are teachers who have not been getting salaries since three months. We don't understand why this injustice is being meted out to teachers."
