The two girls, along with their father, were on their way to Chatrapati Shivaji airport in a Tata Sumo (MH04BD5892) to receive their mother, who was returning home after her Haj in Mecca (Saudi Arabia), when misfortune struck.

The family resides in Bhiwandi at Chori Mohalla, and had left the place around 6am on Friday. The flight was to land around 8.30-9am. But on the way, their vehicle rammed into iron rods protruding out of a trailer (MH46H1897) in front, and the two were seriously injured. The driver of the vehicle, Mehboob Ali Mohammed Ali Shaikh (32), died on the spot. Fortunately, Hajimiya Khalil Shaikh (41), their father, escaped unhurt.

The accident occurred after the Tata Sumo had crossed Bhiwandi and was about to reach Saket Road on Mumbai-Nashik highway. The driver apparently did not notice the protruding iron rods, which cut through the front glass of the Sumo and pierced the driver, who died on the spot.

The girls, sitting on the back seat were also injured. The rods pierced the elder girl (15) on the right side of her stomach, and the head of the 6-year-old younger girl. The locals helped shift the injured to the hospital. The driver was declared brought dead.

Their mother, who reached Mumbai sometime later was in a state of shock after she heard the news.

The Kapurbawdi police have detained the driver of the trailer and registered a case against him for not putting up sign board to alert vehicles coming behind. He has been charged under IPC sections 279, 337, 338, 304 and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
