Maharashtra's first National Law University is finally taking off, thanks to Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Deonar.

The university has announced its admission test for the five year integrated LLB (Hons) and LLM courses. Both the exams will be conducted on Sunday, June 7, and in an online format.

Exam details are available at the website www.nluMumbai.ed.in. The site went on and off throughout Thursday, and some specifications – such as the age limit – were rectified till the time of going to press. University officials called it a 'teething problem' for the youngest NLU of India.

The application form is also available online, which can be filled by May 14. The online test will be conducted at call centres in 19 cities across India, including Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad.

Only 60 seats are available for BA, LLB and BCom LLB, including 10 for the NRI quota; 12 seats are there for LLM, which includes 2 seats for NRIs.

Results of the exams will be announced on June 10, followed by counseling sessions. The academic session is expected to start by the first week of July. Both courses will be taught at TISS Deonar campus.

Since January, dna has been reporting about the plight of the University in finding its feet. The government first allocated a few rooms for the NLU at Ismail Yusuf College, but it deferred the decision amidst protests by the Muslim groups, and also due to litigations.

According to the brochure put up on the website, the course fee for LLB is over Rs2.05 lakh annually, which will increase each year,. "This is much higher as compared to other law colleges," complained one of the aspirants.

Moreover, all students will have to compulsorily stay in campus, which may cost their parents at least Rs1.0 lakh a year, which many may not be able to afford.

Prof BP Panda, the vice chancellor of the MNLU, however claimed that they are charging lesser than the other NLUs. "Residential campus is a must for premier education as most teachers are visiting faculty from across India and abroad, and classes may be conducted in the evening as per faculty's availability," added Panda.

Pattern of LLB admission test 2015-16 (exam in English)
*Total Marks: 200; multiple-choice questions of one mark each
*Duration of examination: Two hours
* English including comprehension: 40 marks; General Knowledge and Current Affairs: 50 marks; Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability): 20 marks; Legal Aptitude: 50 marks; Logical Reasoning: 40 marks
*Negative marking: 0.33 marks will be deducted for each incorrect answer

Expect trouble at the admission test?
NLU Mumbai seems to be apprehensive over the smooth conduct of the test. The brochure of the admission states a few clauses. A point which has made aspirants, who are just 12th graders currently, worried, is: "A possibility for occurrences of some problem in administration of the examination cannot be ruled out completely, which may impact test delivery and/or result from being generated. In that event, every effort will be made to rectify the problem, which may include shifting the candidates to the other centers or to conduct of another examination if considered necessary. Decision of MNLU in this regard shall be final."
Another clause which candidates are fretting over is: "If the examination is held in more than one session, the scores across various sessions will be equated to adjust for slight differences in difficulty level of different test batteries used across sessions."
