So severe is the scarcity of water in the Nashik region that fights are now breaking out over the issue, with the driver of a water tanker being beaten up in Yeola tehsil on Tuesday. The driver — who was carrying water to a village in Yeola — launched a police complaint saying that people from another village beat him up demanding that the tanker be emptied there.

The police said that Vishnu Chavan (39), a resident of Badapur in Yeola, owns a tanker. His gram panchayat had hired this tanker in order to provide water to the village. Accordingly, Chavan, who drives the tanker himself, was bringing water from a well in Nandur to Badapur around 9am on Tuesday. But he was stopped en route in the outskirts of Paregaon village by a man identified as Gulab Pawar and some others, who demanded that the tanker be emptied in Paregaon itself. When Chavan refused, they pulled him out of the running tanker and beat him up, injuring his hands and legs.

On hearing of the incident, villagers from Badapur, which is a few miles away, rushed to Paregaon to protect their water. A tense situation then prevailed for a while. But it was brought under control after the tehsildar, block development officer and the police intervened.

In his police complaint, Chavan stated that Pawar and his men have been threatening him for water for the past few days, before attacking him on Tuesday, causing him to be admitted to the Nashik civil hospital.

In another incident in Surgana tehsil, a 60-year-old woman who was carrying a pot of water over some distance was beaten up by a mob after a fight broke out between her and another person from the village. The woman sustained brain injuries and died on Monday.
