As an example of thorough investigation, the city crime branch and Shivaji Nagar police have jointly cracked the murder of a 12-year old girl who went missing since last Saturday and was found murdered in Bainganwadi area of Govandi the next morning.

Who is the accused?
The police have arrested 20-year-old Qasim Yusuf Khan, a tailor. According to police sources, Khan stayed in the same locality as that of the victim. Khan's shop called Qasim Tailor is close to the victim's residence.

What was the chain of events?
"On the day of the incident, the victim had visited Khan's shop for getting a cloth stitched. On seeing an opportunity, Khan raped the victim and later strangulated her to death around 5.15pm. Khan then kept the body at the rear of his shop, closed the shop and left for home," said a police officer, requesting anonymity.
The officer added that, around 1.30 am, he wrapped victim's body in a mat, carried it on a cycle till Ambedkar garden and dumped it in a dustbin.

What were the parents doing?
After the victim did not return, her parents, who are labourers, started a search operation which did not yield any results. According to the poilice, the parents approached them at 12.30am on Sunday following which a case was registered at the Shivaji Nagar police station. Later in the day, the body was found in the dustbin.

How the crime was detected?
The police had found the body wrapped in a mat. "Small pieces of cloth, different in texture and colours, were found stuck to the mat. Such cloths are usually taken as samples by tailors. This was our first clue," said an officer.
In one of the cloths, the police found a name "Hakeem Saahab" scribbled on it. "We then rounded up all the tailors from the vicinity and questioned them. On checking the register of Khan we found it to to be the name of one of his clients. We then went to Khan's shop and asked for the cloth that Hakeem Saahab wanted to get stitched. The cloth matched with the piece of cloth found stuck in the mat. On sustained questioning, Khan broke down and admitted to having committed the crime on Monday," the officer said.
