In the backdrop of the Swachh Bharat mission, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to give the issue of open defecation a top priority. To put an end to the unhealthy practice, it will focus on fixing existing public toilets and building new ones wherever necessary.

If the BMC goes about the task with zeal, citizens may see multi-level toilets coming up at many places across Mumbai.

Stressing the need for having adequate number of toilets, civic chief Ajoy Mehta, in a meeting on Saturday, asked the assistant commissioners of all 24 wards to make optimum utilisation of funds allocated for building toilets.

The civic said that at several places people are forced to defecate in the open for want of sanitation facilities. Directing the senior officials to put a stop to the practice, Mehta asked them come up with plans to increase toilet seats.

In case of space crunch, Mehta said, officials should explore options such as adding floors to existing public toilets so that more and more people can use the facilities.

"He has promised that all the genuine proposals will be dealt on priority and administrative hassles in the way of getting approvals for the toilet plans will be tackled," said a senior official who attended the meeting.

'Treat labour chowkies as ward office'
BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta has asked senior civic officials to revamp labour chowkies and treat them like second ward offices. Labour chowkies are small offices that are responsible for day-to-day maintenance work done by BMC staffers.

"Presently, labour chowkies are ill-equipped and dilapidated structures which are used by workers from all the departments, including maintenance, water, solid waste management and storm water drains," said an official.

The official said the chowkies will be provided with water and electricity, fans, ladies changing room and toilets. "Also, there is an issue of defunct biometric attendance machines. The civic chief has directed the officials to resolve this as soon as possible."
