Exactly a month after a person was killed and four others were injured in a double collision on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), another mishap was reported from the spot on Wednesday night. A speeding SUV hit a toll booth on the north-bound end of the sea link, damaging the structure and injuring three toll workers.

The accident was reported at 11.45pm, when a Toyota Fortuner rammed toll booth number 11 and critically injured three employees – Ramchandra Patil, Gyaneshwar Bide and Neeraj Pawar. Anmol Gupta (19), who was on a joyride with his friends, was driving the SUV. The injured workers were rushed to the Bhabha hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable. Gupta, too, sustained minor injuries and was later arrested by the Bandra police.

The toll workers said they had noticed the car speeding towards the booth from quite a distance, but they assumed it will slow down eventually, as the driver needed to pay the toll. The booth sustained a lot of damage due to the impact, with the computer system and CCTV monitoring device broken into pieces.

"Due to the accident, heavy traffic was reported from the sea link till 11am on Thursday. The commuters faced a lot of inconvenience. The car and remains of the booth were later shifted from the side of the road using cranes," said a toll operator.

Speaking to dna, a police officer said, "The vehicle is registered under the name of Gupta's father. Gupta was out on a joyride with his friends. He claimed that he was speeding and lost control over the vehicle. According to the preliminary medical examination, no alcohol traces were found in Gupta's blood. So, it's a case of rash driving and is still under police investigation. We will send the seized SUV to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to ascertain if there was any mechanical fault as well."
