A 46-year-old engineer who had been quarantined for suspected swine flu allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the fifth floor of Dr DY Patil Hospital in Nerul on Monday. Prakash Lingoje was a local resident and a native of Karnataka. He was rushed to the emergency ward, where he succumbed to his injuries. His wife was undergoing treatment for swine flu in the same hospital, while his two children, aged 11 and 2, were quarantined in a different ward.

Did he leave behind a suicide note?
Lingoje was alone in an isolation ward before he was found dead. Sangeeta Alphonso, senior inspector of Nerul police station said they had not recovered any suicide note and had registered a case of accidental death. "Prima facie, it looks like he took the drastic step out of frustration. However, further investigation will help us find out more details," added Alphonso. They are exploring as possible aspects including Lingoje's fear of being infected with swine flu.

How are his wife and children?
The hospital administration said that his wife, Preama Lingoje, who was admitted on Saturday with swine flu, was likely to be discharged on Tuesday. Dr Syam More, deputy medical superintendent of Dr D Y Patil Hospital, said, "Lingoje was looking normal as he was looking after his wife Prema, who was admitted on Saturday, round the clock. On Sunday evening, Lingoje complained that he too was having mild fever for the last couple of days, following which we admitted him too. The hospital also carried out necessary tests to check if he too had contracted swine flu."
Lingoje's report is expected to come by Tuesday. However, his two children also developed mild fever and are undergoing treatment in the out patient department. "His two children have mild fever and being monitored," said the hospital authorities.
Dr More also said that swine flu may not be the reason of suicide. "Lingoje was under isolation in a ward far away from wards with patients confirmed to have swine flu. It seems it was premeditated, but only police investigation can reveal the truth," he added.

Did his family notice anything amiss?
in According to Lingole's brother Suraj, he was not in the hospital when his brother committed suicide. He was shocked as his brother had not discussed anything with him that could have caused distress and prompted him to take such a step. "He asked me to come Mumbai from Karnataka as they were not well for the last couple of days. Everything seemed normal," Police have sent Lingoje's body to NMMC hospital in Vashi for post-mortem.
