A 30-year-old man died on Tuesday after falling from the second floor of a building in Chembur while trying to flee after the residents raised an alarm of a suspected robbery.

The deceased has been identified as Sunil Kumar Singh. As per the police, Singh was allegedly sitting on the roof of a shed along with two other men. A resident of the building noticed the trio sitting on the roof and raised an alarm.

An officer from Chembur police said: "The trio was sitting on the shed, which was 25 feet high. At 4.30 am, one of the residents saw them perched there and raised an alarm, thinking them to be robbers. Singh and his associates panicked and began running from the place."

He added: "While trying to escape from the spot, Singh slipped and came crashing down on the ground."

The police were informed about the incident at 5.15 am, and rushed an unconscious Singh to Rajawadi hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).

The police suspect that Singh and men had allegedly assembled on the shed to consume drugs, which was when the resident spotted them.

Dyanesh Devde, senior police inspector of Chembur police said: "Singh succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday at 7.15 am in the hospital. We have sent his body for a post-morterm, and have registered a case of accidental death."

Devde added: "We are trying to track Singh's associates as they may be able to throw light on why they assembled on the shed at such odd hours."
