Suspect in minor rape and murder case identified, police sources

The Shivaji Nagar police detained few persons in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl who had gone missing since Saturday evening and was found murdered in Govandi on Sunday morning. The police claim to have have identified the suspect and that a breakthrough is likely within the next 48 hours.

Following the incident, a mob of local residents had gathered outside Shivaji Nagar police station on Monday and demanded arrest of the culprit. Deputy commissioner of police, Zone VI, Sangramsingh Nishandar informed the locals that the investigation was on the right track and that they would make a breakthrough soon.

"Few persons have been detained in the case. We have a fair idea about the suspect and are gathering more information about him," said Nishandar.

The teenage girl left her house in Govandi at 5pm on Saturday and went missing. The girl's parents, who are labourers, started a fruitless search. According to the police, the parents approached them at 12.30am on Sunday following which a case was registered at the Shivaji Nagar police station.

The girl's body was found dumped in a dustbin near Ambedkar garden in Bainganwadi area. Her limbs were tied and there were strangulation marks on her neck with bruises on her body. Her body was wrapped in a mat.
