If you thought concerts are only about band performances and dance shows, think again! Renowned vocalists will now will display their talent at the Avishkar concert on February 21 at the Nehru Centre in Worli at 7pm

“We wanted to bring sur, taal and nritya all on one stage. Percussionist Anindo Chatterjee, vocalist Kaushiki Chakrabarthy, kathak dancer Sandeep Mahavir and multi-faceted percussionist Ranjit Barot will come together on one platform for the first time,” said Shashi Vyas of Pancham Nishad, the organiser.

Kaushiki Chakrabarthy, daughter of Indian classical vocalist Ajoy Chakrabarthy, has participated in several concerts including the Dover Lane Music Conference, Spring Festival of Music (California) and Parampara Program (Los Angeles).

“This is the second time that I’m experimenting with a combination of contemporary and classical music. My first such experiment was at the Coke Studio with Shantanu Moitra. I’ll be performing solo with traditional renditions in the beginning,” she said.

Barot, who has always had melody and rhythm as an integral part of his life with ancestors who have left a mark in the field of Indian classical music, says he is curious to see what the others will perform. His mother is renowned Kathak exponent Sitara Devi.

“We instinctively react, improvise and perform. This is not a rehearsed act. The audience will either love it or trash it. But every performer hopes its love than hate,” Barot said.

Sandeep Mahavir hopes that the new performances will have a touch of tradition too. “It is possible to embrace both without a clash,” he said.
