Admissions for first year of degree colleges will resume and the second merit list will be declared on Saturday, July 14, announced University of Mumbai (MU) on Friday.

The decision to resume the admission process comes after the Supreme Court dismissed the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Maharashtra State government and MU challenging Bombay High Court's decision to quash reservation for students from backward categories in minority institutions.

MU has issued a revised schedule for the admission process, which was halted by the State after the first merit list was declared.

The second merit list, which was scheduled for June 22 which will now be declared on July 14, and third and final merit list will be out on July 18. "This is a big relief to students," said Ashok Wadia, principal of Jai Hind College in Churchgate, adding, "We will start the admission process as soon as the university sends us the revised schedule."

Meanwhile, various student wings have decided to meet leaders from political parties to bring amendment to the law governing reservation in educational institutes.

"Different students bodies and president of Nationalist Congress Party, Sharad Pawar, will meet the HRD minister to request him to table the bill in Parliament and amend Article 15 (5)," said Ajay Tapkir, secretary of Prahar Student Organization.

Santosh Gangurde, state vice president of the students wing of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, echoed Tapkir's opinion while saying, "We accept the decision of the honourable apex court. Though the state government has lost the SLP, our struggle will continue as it is a question of the rights of the people of the soil. Next week, representatives of all students organizations will go to Delhi to meet parliamentarians as this is a matter of constitutional amendment and huge debate is needed in both the Houses."
