To ensure that the energy used to water their gardens is also green, the Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA) has installed a solar power plant to maintain the Bay View Marina garden.
"The idea was to have a clean source of energy and also reduce the monthly bill of electricity," said Padmakar Nandekar, secretary general of CPRA.
The residents' association put up the solar panel with donations made by the Rotary Club of Bombay. The plant that will generate 10 KW per hour costs around Rs 10 lakh.
"We did not have to pay for it. The solar plant is now expected to take care of two motors that are used to supply water for the garden," added Nandekar.
"If there is good sunlight, in reality from 9 am to 4 pm around five to six kilo watt of electricity will be saved per hour. The life of solar panel is 25 years and can last for a maximum to 40 years. If 6,000 watts is saved per hour, then a good 30,000 watts can be saved each day," said Kumar Thakkar, managing director of the solar company that has installed the solar panels.
Residents expect the bill to be reduced by nearly half of what they get at the moment.
"We get a monthly bill of nearly Rs 35,000. The solar plant should be able to take care of power worth Rs 15,000 a month. This will make for considerable savings. Most of the bill amount is generated by water pumps because they were run nearly 16 hours a day. If we get some sponsorship in future, we will look to expanding the plant," said Nandekar.
