Backing Ajit Pawar in his ambition to become Maharashtra chief minister, NCP state unit president Sunil Tatkare on Monday condemned former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan for his choice of words regarding Pawar's ambition.

It may be recalled that without naming Pawar, Chavan had said that the "demonic ambition" to become chief minister had resulted in bringing to an end the 15-year-old Congress-NCP alliance. Chavan had criticised Pawar while addressing party workers at Karad South constituency.

Many Dalit leaders from the Republican Party of India (Athavale), including vice president Kakasaheb Khambalkar, RPI (Ekatawadi) leader Nanasaheb Indise, Dalit Panther state president Sukhadev Sonawane, RPI (secular) PK Gaikwad, Dalit Panther working president Mangesh More, and their followers joined the NCP in Tatkare's presence.

Speaking to media persons, Tatkare said there is nothing wrong in nursing an ambition to become the chief minister, and Ajit Pawar has amply explained it during his interview with a TV channel. "But the word used by Chavan was not proper. He used the word demonic (to describe the) ambition, and it is condemnable," he added.

Refuting the allegations that the NCP has an understanding with the BJP while breaking the alliance with Congress, Tatkare said, "Such allegations are being made for obvious reasons, right from the NCP's inception. Still, I would make it clear that there is no discussion whatsoever in this regard. NCP has always stood for secular thought and, despite fighting elections against Congress in 1999, took the initiative to form an alliance with the party for keeping communal forces away from power."

On who would be NCP's main rivals in the elections, Tatkare said BJP and Shiv Sena, adding that the party has been fighting against the two for the last 15 years. When asked if NCP would again join hands with Congress after the election results, he said, "Let the results come out first... but we are always committed to secular thought."
