Sunil Shitap, who has been blamed for the collapse of the Sai Siddhi building in Ghatkopar, was the Lok Sabha constituency organiser of Shiv Sena’s wing for co-operatives bodies, the Shiv Sahakar Sena. Sena leaders, however, claim that Shitap was removed from his post in the organisation as he was inactive.

On Tuesday, local Shiv Sena leaders had claimed that though Shitap’s wife Swati had contested the recent BMC polls from ward number 126 in Ghatkopar as a Sena nominee, they were not active Shiv Sainiks. Swati had however lost to Archana Bhalerao of the MNS, ending up at number three. Incidentally, Swati was counted as among the richest candidates in the elections with movable and immovable assets worth Rs 26 crore.

“We fielded his wife as this was an OBC ward. We had little contact with him after his wife’s defeat in the elections. They did not even come to the local shakha. He is not a Shiv Sena worker though he does help our local activists,” the Shiv Sena leader had claimed.

Meanwhile, Shitap's facebook page has posts congratulating him for being selected as the Lok Sabha organizer of the Shiv Sahakar Sena.

Shitap’s Facebook profile also has posts wishing Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray on his birthday and wishing Shiv Sainiks on the party’s foundation day on July 19. It also has posts congratulating him for being selected as the Lok Sabha organizer of the Shiv Sahakar Sena.

Shitap, who hails from Srivardhan in Raigad, was the Lok Sabha constituency organiser of the Shiv Sena’s Shiv Sahakar Sena. Shitap was said to be in the MNS before switching over to the Shiv Sena.

When contacted, Shilpa Sarpotdar, who heads the Shiv Sahakar Sena, admitted that Shitap had been an office bearer of the unit, which is a Shiv Sena affiliate working in the co-operative sector, but claimed he had been sacked from his post a month ago as he was inactive at the organizational level.

“We terminated him last month along with those who did not spare time for the organization,” she added.
