Chief fire officer Sunil Nesarikar, who passed away on Sunday afternoon, was instrumental in bringing several small, yet significant changes in the fire brigade that has been reeling under multiple scams, corruption and union issues within the force. The Kalbadevi incident came as a big blow to the morale of the brigade. "It's an inexplicable loss to the brigade," an official said.
For instance, when Nesarikar was promoted in July last year as the chief of the brigade, he gradually started implementing the daily drill which had stopped for months. A senior fire official admitted, "The regular drill had stopped, but after Nesarikar sir took over, it started gradually."
That's not all. Fire brigade officials remember Nesarikar as a creative, disciplined and a tech-savvy officer. "Had he been there, he could have surely ensured the long-pending modernisation of the brigade," the official said, adding that the concept of a fire prevention cell for fire inspection of buildings and FAUs (fire alert unit) fitted in each building for alerts were Nesarikar's brainchild. Both are projects are yet to be implemented.
Fire officials say Nesarikar instilled discipline in the fire brigade. "Even unions started complaining less because on several instances he had worked out a solution for them," an official with the Byculla fire station told dna.
