Summer hasn't set in yet, scorching weather only temporary: IMD

The past three days have left many Mumbaikars taking cover from a merciless midday sun. While winter in Mumbai can hardly be termed severe, the sharp transition to 38 degrees Celsius over the past 3 days has made it the second hottest day in February over the last decade. The past three days have left many Mumbaikars taking cover from a merciless midday sun. While winter in Mumbai can hardly be termed severe, the sharp transition to 38 degrees Celsius over the past 3 days has made it the second hottest day in February over the last decade. Still, officials say that the change in weather is only temporary.

The hottest day was recorded in 2012, at 39.1 degree Celsius. In the past three days, the maximum temperature has seen a 7-8 degree departure from normal.

Despite what may seem to be the case, this isn't the early onset of summer, said VK Rajeev, director, Indian Meteorology Department. He added: "There is an anti-cyclone near Gujarat. Right now, the winds blowing over Maharashtra are easterly winds and there are no wind systems coming in from the north."

The torment, he said, will not last long. "The condition is set to improve in a couple of days, and the temperatures will subside to normal levels," added Rajeev.

The Dewoolkar family was just one of many residents taken aback by the sudden rise. "It was my sister's wedding on Saturday, and being a Hindu family, our rituals needed to be done in the presence of fire, so it got extremely uncomfortable after a while. We also had planned a ritual at home with food being served on the terrace, but the heat made it impossible to do so without constructing a mandap with extra fans and ensuring cold drinking water was available to guests," said Pooja Dewoolkar, a Vile Parle resident.
