Almost a week after Jude Mascarenhas (41) hanged himself after sending a suicide selfie to his wife, Doris Mascarenhas on Sunday refuted the allegation that her divorce notice prompted him to take the extreme step. Doris, a teacher of St Francis De Sales English High School, said that it was in fact her husband who had sent her a divorce notice.
Almost a week after Jude Mascarenhas (41) hanged himself after sending a suicide selfie to his wife, Doris Mascarenhas on Sunday refuted the allegation that her divorce notice prompted him to take the extreme step. Doris, a teacher of St Francis De Sales English High School, said that it was in fact her husband who had sent her a divorce notice.
Jude had committed suicide in his Tanishk Apartments flat in Nalasopara (West) on September 8. The suicide selfie image sent to his wife on WhatsApp had the text saying 'Sweety Bye'.
Doris has claimed that her husband was jobless for the past four years and they were living on her earnings. But despite all odds, she wanted to save their marriage. However, he had served her a divorce notice and she was forced to reply to it.
"We got married in February 2011. Since Jude was unemployed, I had to work hard to earn a living. I bore all the expenses, including his mobile bills and the petrol for his bike. I was giving him some pocket money as well. I was paying the EMI for the house which we purchased in April 2014," said Doris.
"Even after he served the separation notice on August 17, I continued to stay with him hoping that he would change his decision. But when he insisted that I reply to the notice within 15 days, I left my matrimonial home and went back to my parents on August 21. My reply was sent to his lawyer on September 1," she added.
A family friend of the Mascarenhas who did not wish to be named said: "Jude was jobless. He always wanted to be self-employed but he failed in establishing any business. Doris has been paying the EMI for the their flat."
