Mystery shrouds the death of Assistant Commissioner of Police (anti-terrorism squad) Vinod Bhat, who was run over by a Thane-CST local train near Dadar station on Monday night. Even as the officer’s body was cremated on Tuesday with full state honours, the police are not sure if he committed suicide or met with a fatal accident.

A police officer said Bhat never travelled by train or bus. So, what was he doing at the railway track on Monday night? Some ATS officers said his death was an accident. They said there was no immediate evidence to suggest that he may have committed suicide. But some of his colleagues hinted at the possibility of him being under “acute stress”.  “He could have been under stress caused by family problems. This aspect is being explored,” said an officer.

Joint Commissioner of Police and ATS chief KP Raghuvanshi said, “It is likely that he had been undergoing some difficulties of late.” Inspector Namdeo Kadam of Dadar railway police station said the incident took place at 9.45 pm on Monday. The motorman of the CST-bound slow local informed the Dadar station master that a man was knocked down by his train below the Tilak bridge, barely 100 meters away from platform no 3. The station master informed the GRP at Dadar, who took Bhat to Sion hospital where he was declared dead.

Railway cops found a police identity card, 30 rupees and a match box in his trouser and a broken spectacle from the spot. But no suicide note was found. The GRP informed the Mumbai Police. Ashok Desai, ACP Mahim, identified the deceased as Vinod Bhat. “If it was suicide, we would have got a suicide note. We are investigating how he came on railway track,” an officer said.

Commissioner AN Roy visited Bhat’s home in Prabhadevi.
