Sudhir Mungantiwar woos women with special buses, highway toilets

A similar scheme was mooted by the Congress-NCP government three years ago, but was dropped later due to "safety" issues, mainly of such toilets being deserted at night. The issue of water availability and cleaning also became a road block.

Finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has announced some much-needed schemes for women in the 2016-17 Budget. Women-only Tejaswini buses in Mumbai, Navi-Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nagpur, Kalyan and Dombivli are one of the highlights, aiming to ease the commute for working women. Over 300 such buses have been proposed, for which Rs50 crore have been allocated. The buses would be run by the civic authorities.

Besides, the government has also proposed a grand scheme of building toilets on the highways. As per the plan, there would be one toilet block for women at every 100 km. Over 400 such blocks are proposed in the state, for which Rs50 crore have been set aside.

A similar scheme was mooted by the Congress-NCP government three years ago, but was dropped later due to "safety" issues, mainly of such toilets being deserted at night. The issue of water availability and cleaning also became a road block.

Meanwhile, considering the skewed sex-ratio in the state, the Budget also talks about allocation of Rs25 crore to Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana. Besides, an outlay of Rs100 crore has been given to convert 10,000 Anganwadis to Adarsh Anganwadis. Anganwadi sevikas would be given Rs2 lakh life insurance policy, for which the premium would be paid by the government.

Two new schemes for rural women empowerment have also been announced in the Budget. The Sumati Tai Sukhalikar Udyogini Mahila Sakshamikarna aims to provide loan at nil interest to women self-help groups, and Rs10 crore has been allocated for the same. The Balasaheb Thakare Smruti Matoshree Gram Panchayat and Mahila Sakshamikarna Mission aims to encourage women at Gram Panchayat level.
