Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education Ravindra Waikar on Monday asked all colleges and universities in the state to furnish a report, in a month, on steps taken by them to ensure the safety of students.

In a letter issued on Monday, the minister raised concerns over the alarming number of cases of ragging, sexual harassment and violence on university campuses across the country. In this backdrop, colleges and universities across the state have been asked to send a report about the precautions taken by them to ensure safety on their campuses.

"The number of students in colleges and universities across the state have been rising every year. Hence it is the responsibility of the respective college or university to ensure that its students are safe. Many university canteens, hostels and libraries have poor security measures. Therefore, the institutes should ensure that all security measures such as installation of CCTVs, have been made," the letter states.
