Lending a police cap to a suspect in a cruelty to wife case proved costly for a police sub-inspector (PSI) of Bandra police station. The suspect, who clicked a picture with the cap, showed the photograph to his wife, who then brought the matter to the notice of senior officers. Following this, the PSI has been placed under suspension.

According to the police sources, a cruelty to wife case was registered with the Bandra police station last year. "It had come to light that investigating officer of the case, police sub-inspector Jagannath Ganage, had maintained a friendship with the accused in the said case, Shoaib Haroon Rashid Shaikh and his relative Imran Ibrahim Shaikh. He also took 17 pairs of footwear from Shaikh's footwear shop," said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

He added that, Ganage allegedly gave his police uniform cap to Shoaib and took his photograph on a mobile phone. "Shoaib reportedly showed the said photograph to his wife, also the complainant Gulnar, and boasted his relationship with the police. Shoaib also told Gulnar that police cannot take any action against him," the officer said.

Gulnar then met senior police inspector of Bandra with her lawyer regarding this issue and the senior inspector asked PSI Ganage to produce the accused persons in the case before him. Instead of producing Shoaib and Imran, Ganage produced another person Irfan Shaikh before senior inspector.

"When he was told that this is not Imran, Ganage said since Irfan was wearing a cap, he could not identify him and brought Irfan to the police station. However, the senior inspector did not buy this explanation of Ganage, as the latter had arrested Imran and would often visit the footwear shop of the accused and it is not possible for him to not identify the person. It was alleged that Ganage had deliberately tried to mislead the senior officer. For his acts, Ganage has been suspended from service pending proposed primary departmental inquiry," the officer said.
