A student of Home Science from Nirmala Niketan College conducted a study that shows that 80 per cent of mothers and 88 per cent of fathers believe that child care providers such as teachers and staff at daycare centres are the people who can sexually abuse a child.

Manasi Bist took a sample size of 100 parents, 50 mothers and 50 fathers, in her research. Of these, 86 per cent were married and 14 per cent were single parents. With this study, Bist aimed to find out how aware parents were regarding child sexual abuse (CSA) of children between 2 to 6 years of age.

On being asked about the reasons for a child being prone to child sexual abuse, a majority of the parents said that the child was lacking adult supervision (mothers 76 per cent; fathers 86 per cent), trusting adults easily (mothers 54 per cent; fathers 72 per cent). Other responses obtained from parents were child having some form of disability (mothers 20 per cent and fathers 34 per cent). When it came to the reasons for an adult sexually abusing a child, psychological disorder was one of the reasons stated by (mothers 66 per cent; fathers 80 per cent).

Dr Kamini Rege, Assistant professor, Nirmala Niketan College of Home Science and Treasurer, Early Childhood Association (India), said, "Our goal should be to build and maintain a proactive environment that protects children by either preventing child abuse before it occurs or by ensuring its earliest possible detection, intervention and reporting."

Bist said, "Though parents get the information about child sexual abuse through the internet, they are not sure whether they can reply on these sources. This brings a dire need for a standardised framework that can guide parents on such information."
