Celebrating an eco-friendly Diwali, the students of KPB Hinduja College contributed money towards a social cause instead of buying crackers for themselves.
According to the students, they started collecting the funds over a week in advance with around 20 students from the NSS unit participating in the initiative. Speaking about it, Prajesh Shetty, memberof the NSS unit of the college said, "We collected over Rs 8,000 in a week and instead of buying crackers for the orphans from the Bandra East Community, we preferred buying stationery, blankets and clothes for them. We believe that the initiative, 'Lighting a Smile' will bring a smile to their faces during the festival."
Adding more information, Pawan Kunchikor, 19, a second year student said, "We gifted them with basic stationaries which they can use in schools. We visited every classroom and inspired other students and staff members inside the college premises to donate for the cause."
Commenting on the initiative, Principal of the college said, "While Diwali is a festival where everyone buys new things for themselves, the students of KPB Hinduja College believed that 'happiness doubles when you share it with someone'. With that aim in mind, the NSS unit of the college collected money from the teachers and staff with which they bought gifts and refreshments for the orphanage kids. The students are not taking up such initiatives merely for marks. This is something that is a part of the value system followed by the college, to connect and give back to the society."
