With Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane having gone bag-less since this academic year, the students there now feel as if they are on a picnic, since all they have to think about while packing their bags is what food to put in their tiffin boxes.

Singhania School has told its junior KG (kindergarten) to class V students to come to school without their bags from June 8 onwards. This has brought much-needed relief to students and parents as well. "I feel as if I am going for a picnic," said Amanda Pereira of class III. "Now, I just come to school with my water bottle, tiffin box and school calendar," she added.

Keeping in mind that the weight of the students' bags needed to be reduced, the school came up with an idea wherein the students have been given bags that are attached to their classroom desks. The bag, which has a lot of different sections, has space for books, a dictionary, compass box, craft material, etc. "Before leaving the school, the children arrange their books in accordance to the next day's timetable. This also teaches them management values," said school principal Revathi Srinivasan, the brain behind this idea.

Also, since the schoolchildren are not given any homework, this leaves them with a lot of time to bond with their family members and exercise their curiosity to learn through experience. "We want the children to spend time with their families, read stories and have discussions," she said.

Plus, to help the children inculcate the habit of reading, the school is introducing a rapid reader from this year that has stories written by students of class XI for those in classes I and II. The stories have been written in such a manner that the children will be able to understand them.

The parents, too, are happy with this change, since their children don't have to lug heavy bags to school any more. "This is a great concept, since it saves time and effort spent in carrying heavy bags to school," said Priyanka Patil, the mother of student Neel Patil. "Neel comes home very happy, plus there is no homework," she added.

Even for students of class V and above, the school has already put in place term books wherein a single book contains the chapters of all the subjects for that term. "They also do not have to bring any notebooks, bringing just 10 or more pages from a notepad which they later go home and file," Srinivasan said.
