The Oberoi International School (OIS) at Goregaon pulled off a unique initiative to encourage community outreach among its students on Friday with the first ever 'Outreach Mela', where several NGOs showcased their work. Students got acquainted with all the organisations present, with the option of connecting of getting involved with a cause.

The day-long festival was a platform for NGOs and service organisations to demonstrate how they have contributed to society. The mela was open not only to students, but also their parents. Over a dozen NGOs were present including Goonj, Annaamrit, Diabetic foot clinic, In Defense of Animals, Sahyog, Pragati, Pravaha, Teach for India, Kids for Tigers, Udaan India Foundation, Habitat for Humanity and Your Turn Now.

The mela was a great opportunity for the organisations to raise substantial funds for their causes with the support of the school.

Dr Vladimir Kuskovski, principal of Oberoi International School, said, "Here at OIS we firmly believe in the development of the whole child, which in other words means that our students' education neither ends nor begins in the classroom alone. Social responsibility is one of our key core values. Thus, from the early years, we put a lot of emphasis on spreading awareness about the needs of the society around us and teach the children to contribute to charitable causes, as it is a very important part in our view of human development."

Stuti Srivastava, a Std 7 student, said, "The school already has a global issue network club which is a student-led initiative to address global issues. The mela was a great experience. I was especially impressed by the work done by Habitat for Humanity and would like to work for them."
