The Mumbai University’s decision of allotting average marks to 1600 students whose papers are missing has not gone down well with the students. Students protested that granting average marks would dilute their scores, thus affecting the overall result.

On September 28, the university had decided to allot average marks to all the students whose papers were logically or physically missing. After a series of meetings with the deans of faculties and key officials, the university came up with the formula for calculating the marks of such students. As per the formula, students would be allotted marks for their missing papers after calculating the average of all the other subjects in that term. However, with more than one paper of several students yet to be found, their scores might be diluted with this formula.

“I was told that two of my papers are yet to be traced by the university officials. I was expecting good scores in both these subjects. Giving average marks would really be unfair,” said a law student on the condition of anonymity.

Students also complained about the lack of direction from the university about the status of their pending results. “Result for one of my papers was reserved. Despite writing to the university several times, there is no response. There is no clarity about whether the paper exists or not,” said an M Sc Mathematics student.

A university official said that a list is being prepared. “We are putting together a comprehensive list of all such students whose papers are missing. They will be notified soon,” said the official. He said that in cases where the student has appeared for only one paper, or if all the papers are missing, average marks of the fifth semester would be considered.

“This is a very old, approved practice. Each case would be checked on these norms and marks would be allotted to these students soon,” said the official.
