It just doesn't add up. Secondary School Certificate students having a second go at the general mathematics-I paper were handed the algebra paper at the St Joseph's High School, Wadala on Wednesday. What's worse, the invigilators refused to acknowledge their mistake in time and the students got only 10-15 minutes to attempt the paper.

What happened
Here's how it unfolded: When the examination began, most students failed to realise that it was the algebra paper and not general mathematics-I that they were attempting. When one of the students asked for a graph paper, the invigilators realised that they had distributed the wrong paper. They then arranged for the correct question paper but it was too late. The students had been writing for 10-15 minutes when the final bell rang. After the examination was over, the school authorities asked the students to sign an undertaking that it was their (students) mistake, who failed to recognise the correct paper.

Studentspeak
Students, and parents, were clearly not happy with the goof-up.
Radhika Shah (name changed) one of the students who appeared for the general maths exam said, "We were given the wrong question paper today. When we told the school supervisor that the questions in our question paper are not from our syllabus, the supervisor said that she don't know anything about it. She asked us to attempt whatever we could. If only she had seen our paper, she would have realised that we got the wrong question paper."

Another student, student Vaishnavi Ranade (name changed), said, "It was wrong on the part of the school to take an undertaking from us saying it was our mistake. We are already under
pressure due to the board exams. How is this our mistake? Board should try to help us in
this matter."

Another student's father Rakesh Zaveri (name changed), said, "Ten minutes before the exam get over, the class supervisor came running to the students saying that the question paper they were solving was the wrong one. How irresponsible can they be? We want the board to check with the school authorities and help students."

What authorities had to say?
Laxmikant Pandey, Chairman, Mumbai divisional board, said, "We have asked the school to send us a report and we will carry out an investigation. The exam centre chief has accepted that the wrong question papers were distributed but only to 16 students."

When contacted, the school officials remained unavailable for comments.
