A 12-year-old student of New Horizon Public School, Panvel, died after falling from fourth floor of the school building on Tuesday morning. The boy died in the hospital because of severe injuries.

According to the police, Gaurav Kank, a student of class VI, fell from the corridor of the fourth floor. However, the reason behind his falling remains unknown as the investigation is still on. The incident took place around 10.30am when students reached the school.

"The classes had not started and there is a possibility of negligence on part of the school," said investigation officer police sub-inspector, Vikas Bhanudas Suryavanshi.

Kank resided in sector 1 in Khandeshwar. Police have sent the body for postmortem and registered a case of negligence against the school under section 304A of IPC.

The parent of the deceased and other parents alleged that Kank was punished by school teacher, which forced the student to take the drastic step. SB Suryavanshi, ACP, Panvel said, "Parents staged protest after the incident as they alleged the negligence in the part of the school."

The school management was not available to comment and principal did not reply to an email sent to his ID.
