A 25-strong group of KJ Somaiya college students who built an all-terrain car represented India in the Sasol BAJA South Africa Challenge, 2014, in October. "Our racing car has a good power transmission, an all-wheel locking brake system, adjustable pneumatic shock absorbers and a glass fibre bodywork," said team captain Rohit Salgaonkar.

In South Africa, their design evaluation and sales presentation went well, because of which they got the 10th position without being a part of the main event.

"We secured the first place in our sales presentation. We were asked to focus on selling the car virtually and explain how to produce 4000 units of the car every year. We also had to describe all the features, prepare a market plan, conduct production analysis and planning. Our performance was well appreciated and we would be soon participating in the BAJA Student India competition that will be held in Jamshedpur in January 2015," says Tejas Patel, another member from the group.

It was due to an error in the paper work by Indian customs officials that the group received the car only half a day before the competition began. But, overnight the youngsters tried hard to bring everything under control. Team member Nimish Ojale said, "We had to adjust the engine mounts and spill pan according to the new engine we got there. But, during the safety inspection and check, there was a problem with the brakes." The local team helped them to find dealers of spare parts, but as the brakes did not fit the front wheels, the car could not be part of the racing events.
